New to this....

Hello & welcome!  I am brand new to blogging, but my goal for this blog is to entertain, inform, as well as share ideas and stories.  One thing all teachers have in common is funny stories!  I have always told myself, I need to write these down.  What a better place to do it than in a forum where we can enjoy each other's stories.  Teaching is a tough, yet rewarding, profession and taking time to enjoy the lighthearted moments makes up for some of the tough times.  Of course this will also be a place to share ideas and strategies.  So with that said, a teaching tale...

We have been focusing on figurative language quite a bit in ELA.  My students are required to keep a figurative language journal and write down any figurative language journal they encounter throughout the day. I encourage them to listen for them in addition to reading for them.  Throughout the week, they put their findings on a post-it  and then on the appropriate poster in the classroom.  Every Friday, we go over them and do different activities with figurative language.  I also tell the students that if they are not sure about one, they come can and ask me before it goes on the poster.  Before I tell the rest of the story, I have to let you know that my students have a hard time with similes, they think any sentence with like or as is a simile, so I am constantly reminding them to look for a comparison.  One day in class one of my most well-behaved students comes up to me to check his simile.  It read, "I like big butts and I cannot lie".  Let's just say I had a very hard time not bursting out laughing.
